OV-chipkaart

"OV-chipkaart" (OV chip card) is the only means of paying for the public transport system (tram, bus, metro) in The Netherlands. It is also valid on the NS railway system. The smart card is the size of a bank card and contains an invisible chip. It can be pre-loaded with credit in Euros after which you may travel anywhere within The Netherlands.

There is no specific OV-chipkaart for visitors. You may use an anonymous or disposable OV-chipkaart:

  • The anonymous OV-chipkaart is a plastic card on which an amount or travel credit can be loaded.
  • A disposable OV-chipkaart is for a single trip or for predefined short-term use. For example, a one-day train or bus ticket or a 3-day ticket for all public transport within the city of Amsterdam.

To get one of these cards, go to a counter of one of the public transport companies, vending machines at the station, tabacco and convenience stores or supermarkets.
